We all have days where we just do not feel like doing anything. Whether it’s plain old laziness or we’re doubting our work, there are some days when it feels like nothing is going to get done. Fortunately, there are things we can do to get going.
Grab A Notebook Or Open Up That Textpad
Sometimes you just have to get ideas down. Any ideas. Words, pictures, anything. Just get going. I like to start my day writing 3 pages of whatever just to rev up the engine and make sure my day gets off on the right foot. This idea is from The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. The point is you unclutter your mind from whatever it’s bothering in order to get going.
Study From The Best
The creative grind is an ebb and flow process. Sometimes you feel like creating, sometimes you’re meant to just listen and soak things in. When I’m writing my 3 pages, I always listen to some instrumentals as kind of a warmup for my brain. It gets my mind going, “Hey! This is music right here!” And what we put in our mind, always find a way of expressing itself.
It Doesn’t Have To Be Perfect
The problem is most of us tie our self-worth to our work being absolutely perfect. And while this can sometimes create our best, it can also lead us to not getting anything done at all. Sometimes, us artists, we have to realize that it’s the imperfections that give our work character. Or there are instances when it is best to put our work down and focus on something else. Then come back to that work later when our minds are fresh.
