What Makes The Song So Good – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis “Can’t Hold Us” ft. Ray Dalton

So I’ve decided to name my song analysis section…. What Makes The Song So Good. And for the first song, Im going to analyze Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – “Can’t Hold Us”. First off, props to this ridiculous video!  Great party vibe which is really what the song is all about

Beat – Yo, that steady clap is just sick. And when the trumpets come in during the bridge, GODDAMN! Just super up-tempo, and completely made for clubs and/or spring break venues. Just anywhere people looking to have a good time. I really like the mix of world instruments and just that four on the floor pulse that really grabs you.

Lyrics – That “Can’t Hold Us” hook is crazy. Definitely gets people going crazy at the bars. And the doubletime that Macklemore spits just adds to the awesomeness of the song. My favorite line is “Fat cat, crushing labels out here, Nah they can’t tell me nothing” An obvious nod to the Kanye song. This is a pretty much a “hey fuck you We gonna do what we want and we gonna have a good time doing it” type song and it does an awesome job at that. Really good contrast when it comes to the nanana part during the bridge.

here is the rapgenius analysis of the song.

One of the themes that will always resonate well is “the just not giving a fuck.” Especially in HipHop. Which is pretty much what the whole genre was built on. Expressed correctly through clever phrases that highlight a person’s “come up” and a catchy beat, it will always hit.
