That’s gonna change. You all gonna respect me for ability to do basic book keeping !

I am gonna record my kaizen-like journey into book keeping and how I am gonna use it for music.

Like for example tomorrow, Im going to play a show in Bloomington, IN.

and I have absolutely no idea how to record it. But I will soon.

Kaizen and SongWriting

Kaizen  is the idea of continuous improvement.

Something. Anything.

In anyway shape or form.

Today, write a lyric. Write a poem. Play guitar. Watch a Reason tutorial video. Read a book on How2Rap. Run a few laps around your block. Do those vocal exercises. Find out who Robin Frederick is.

Something. Anything.

Do something that will make you 1% better than you were yesterday.

It adds up.

Of course, always feel free to go more than 1%. go 110% if you want.

But keep going.

Song Analysis – Jay Z – “Holy Grail” ft. Justin Timberlake

Song Analysis – Jay Z – “Holy Grail” ft. Justin Timberlake

Writers – Justin Timberlake, Shawn Carter, Terius “The Dream” Nash, Timothy Mosley, Jerome Harmon, Ernest Wilson, Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic
Producer – The Dream, Timbaland, Jerome “J-Roc” Harmon, No I.D.
BPM: 72

But I still don’t know why, why I love it so much.

This song is a great example of a lot of really effective rhythmic contrasts while still keeping a melodic hook, both vocally and instrumentally, that keeps your interest throughout the whole song.

The most obvious and effective hook is Justin’s Chorus where he sings

And baby, it’s amazing Im in this maze with you
I just can’t crack your code
One day you screaming me love you loud
The next day you’re so cold
One day you’re heree, one day you’re there
one day you care
You’re so unfair, sipping from your cup til it runneth over Holy Grail

Right from the beginning, it just grabs you and forces you to listen to the rest of what the song is about. And what is the song about?

SongWriting Analysis – The Eagles “Lyin Eyes”

This is my absolute favorite song in the world. In terms of songwriting and harmonies and pure awesomeness, you can’t get any better then this track right here.

It started out as a bar scene between a girl and an older gentlemen that Glenn Frey saw and him coming up with the line ” Look at her, she can’t even hide those lyin eyes“, it quickly became the perfect example of what a song should be.

Music Documentary: The Beatles and The Making of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

If you want to be a great songwriter, youHAVE to study the Beatles. Basically every piece of music written after has their melodic fingerprints all over it. This album has everything. From the simplest, enjoyable pop to Indian bhangra beats to being the concept album of concept albums.

yea the audio is a bit out of sync with the speaking, but who cares, it’s The Beatles !

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band deserves to be analyzed over and over again.

SongWriting Analysis: Miley Cyrus “We Can’t Stop”

Writer: Miley Cyrus, Mike Williams II, Timothy Thomas, Theron Thomas, Douglas Davis, Ricky Walter
Producer: Mike Will Made It
BPM: 80

I remember singing karaoke with one of my homies and we were doing Miley Cyrus’s “Party In The U.SA.”
(go ahead, ask why) Cause it’s a great song. And it’s fun to sing, that’s why. Anyways we were singing it, with our “amazing” singing voices when some girl from the crowd goes “If you’re gonna sing this song, at least sing it right.”

Me and my friend kept singing, but I was thinking “What??? This is karaoke…. Not exactly an opera or a choir recital.”

“It’s our party and we can do what we want.”

And that’s why “We Can’t Stop” is a hit. The theme being Me Against The World. Always ask yourself what kind of questions the title raises. Why exactly can’t they stop us? Well it’s because we’re having a party here. OUR party.
Red cups, sweaty bodies and hands up in the air cause right now we ain’t care.

There is only a slight lyrical development here. The first verse feels like a bit more of a setup verse and the second verse to solidify the theme of “not caring.”

Really pay attention to the simplicity, yet effectiveness of the message. We Can’t Stop because those lyrics are empowering. Hey to the girls with the big butts, shake it like you at a strip club.

What Makes The Song So Great – Bruno Mars “Treasure”

Songwriter- Ari Levine, Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, Phredley Brown
Production-The Smeezingtons
BPM – 116
Bruno Mars and The Smeezingtons are definitely one of the more fun songwriting groups of this decade. They’ve written ALOT of hits.

The theme of the song is all about “hey girl you’re so fine, let’s get together!”

He’s basically saying through his lyrics,
”Listen girl, I like you so much, be with me and you’ll be appreciated.”
He’s comparing her to a golden star. A treasure.

The Ten Most Important Themes For SongWriting

songwriting

Songs about relationships rule the charts.

I love you. Now we’re done. Now I lost you. Im so lonely. I cheated on my girlfriend. She cheated on me. We get back together. We break up again. Im never giving this up.

People LOVE drama. They’re addicted to it.  Whether it’s the fun happy times or the endless aching, people need to feel something. If you want to level up your songwriting, then you need to understand why people listen and respond to certain songs.

We’re all natural voyeurs. Curious of everything that is going in our lives and other people’s lives. It’s just human nature.

Being a songwriter, we need to write about the moments that offer change and insight.

What Makes The Song So Great ? – Selena Gomez – Come & Get It

Producer: StarGate (M.S. Eriksen & T.E. Hermansen)
Writers: Ester Dean, M.S. Eriksen & T.E. Hermansen

“Baby, Im addicted”

I’ve  always dug songs with unique rhythms. This brand new track from Selena is considered to be  tribal-electropop, meaning there are different beats playing at the same time. It creates a very hypnotic, groovy feel. It’s got a Bhangra beat, meaning it’s got Indian Bollywood influences. Very moombahton.
